Beyond A Care Job – Featuring Sandra (Home Instead)

This is an entry to recognize a top caregiver in the industry, submitted by Lauren at Home Instead in North Carolina. Please join us is recognizing a care job well done!

Sandra has been an absolute blessing since the day she started with us. She came to us as a retired nurse with 45 years of experience in the nursing industry, looking for something meaningful to do in retirement.

Sandra has made a difference in more instances than I can count but I will focus on two in particular. We have a client who is 94 years old and living alone. Sandra and this client instantly clicked and it was clear they were a perfect match. The client has Sandra come by twice a week to help her with light housekeeping, laundry and meal preparation. This client used to have many hobbies and interests, but with age and living alone, she had started losing her desire to do much. She had previously purchased a sewing machine but never got around to using it. When Sandra (an avid sewer) got into the picture, she surprised the client one day when she woke from a nap to show her that she had set up her sewing machine! Together, they began sewing masks to send to her family. They also have been sewing pillows and curtains to decorate for Christmas! Her apartment is an absolute Winter Wonderland now because of Sandra’s help. Sandra says you can see a difference in the clients demeanor, you can tell she has a purpose each day and is excited for Sandra to come next.

My second favorite story about Sandra is with a client in her seventies who recently had a birthday. The client currently does not get along with her family so this birthday was not going to be a great one for her she said. However, Sandra went out of her way to bring the client balloons on her birthday! The client told me that small effort meant so much to her and it was the best birthday surprise.
